Discover how to create this lovely and lightweight moisturizing lotion suitable for use on both your face and body. It's incredibly smooth and calming, making it perfect for all skin types. Out of all the lotions I've crafted, this one is my absolute favorite.
Equipment
Double boiler - pot and bowl
Spoons
Immersion blender or blender
Glass containers for final product
Measuring cup
Weighing scale for kitchen
Ingredients
1/3 cup Aloe Vera
1/3 cup Jojoba oil, Simmondsia chinensis
1/2 cup Beeswax
1/4 cup Distilled water
3.33 oz fractionated coconut oil, Cocos nucifera
1.33 oz Grapeseed oil, Vitis vinifera
1 ml Vitamin E (Optional)
Essential Oils (Optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Measure all of your ingredients and place them in small separate glass bowls
Step 2: Create a double boiler by adding water to a pot and placing an empty glass bowl on top
Step 3: Place the beeswax in the empty bowl of the double boiler
Step 4: Melt the beeswax. The melting point of beeswax is approximately 62 to 64 degrees Celsius (144 to 147 Fahrenheit) so be patient as it takes time to melt it but it is so worth it
Step 5: Slowly add the other ingredients while stirring. You will notice the solution will resolidify, that is ok, continue to heat to remelt the beeswax
Step 6: Once all ingredients are added, and the solution is completely in liquid form, place the bowl containing the mixture or - like in my case- the double boiler into an ice bath
Step 7: Once solid, I covered my lotion and placed it in the refrigerator for 1 hour
Step 8: Once chilled, thoroughly stir the lotion to see if it has completely emulsified. In my case, I notice that it wasn't and there was oil that had separated
Step 9: Use a blender or an immersion blender to emulsify your lotion
Step 10: Cover the lotion and place it in the fridge or freezer for 15 minutes
Step 11 Congratulations! Your lotion is ready. Transfer your lotion into clean and sanitized glass containers and store in the refrigerator.
Shelf Life: 6 months to 1 year or until you see separation of your lotion, or discoloration or unpleasant odor.
Why I selected these ingredients
Fractionated Coconut oil: Cocos nucifera - Moisturizing and astringent properties. Ideal for mature skin and does not clog pores.
Grapeseed oil, Vitis vinifera - Absorbs quickly, strengthen collagen, astringent, and moisturizing. Great for sensitive or acne prone skin.
Jojoba oil, Simmondsia chinensis - Emollient, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, restorative, Ideal if you have rosacea.
Aloe Vera - Cooling, soothing with emollient properties. Great for helping with would healing.
Beeswax pellets - Anti-microbial and soothing to the skin. Helps protect the skin from dehydration. Because of its high melting point, allows this blend to remain solid at room temperature.
Distilled water - Allows the lotion to be light and it is hydrating to the skin.
Vitamin E - Antioxidant that helps with extending the life of the shelf
Important Notes:
When using essential oils, ensure that the lotion you have formulated meets your expectations, as it is challenging to adjust once added. If you're incorporating essential oils for fragrance, I suggest making a perfume with them—I'll be creating videos on perfume-making soon.
If you're using essential oils to address skin conditions or other health issues, I advise consulting an aromatherapist for a personalized blend. This blend can be applied separately on top of the lotion, allowing you to control the timing and amount of application.
It's important to remember that essential oils are concentrated and must be diluted properly. Some essential oils, like citrus oils that are cold-pressed, can cause photosensitization or phototoxicity if applied beyond the dermal maximum.
Other essential oils, when used beyond this limit, can lead to sensitization. Even when used as spices in your food, they can trigger reactions, and it might take years before you can consume the spice or use the essential oil topically again. In my experience, I used to take oregano supplements but developed a severe reaction whenever I added oregano herb in my food caused a rash and hives. It took five years before I could reintroduce this herb.
To clarify, all my essential oils are only used topically or aromatically. I never ingest essential oils.
